I wanted to share with you some of my favorite affirmations. What are affirmations? A quick Google search provides the following definition:
“Affirmations are positive, specific statements that help you to overcome self-sabotaging, negative thoughts. They help you visualize, and believe in, what you’re affirming to yourself, helping you to make positive changes to your life and career.” – mindtools.com
Before, affirmations were not part of my daily life. Affirmations were what I saw those “super happy and successful” people do on TV or movies. You’ve probably seen a scene or two. You know those movie scenes where a person sticks post-its on their mirror or even writes directly on the mirror. They stare fiercely into their own eyes and repeat, with passion, a positive and motivating phrase to themselves. Repeat every day. I had tried writing affirmations on my mirror a few times over the years. The note that was to inspire and change my life would only last a day or two before being erased.
I used to think affirmations were cheesy. It’s not like I was raised to make affirmations part of my daily routine. Heck, my mom is queen of negative self-talk. Don’t get me wrong, she is amazingly positive and encouraging to her kids (and everyone else in the world, really). However, if she is looking in the mirror or reflecting on herself, it would be absolutely amazing to hear her say something positive about herself (she really should – she is freaking amazing!). But alas, we learn from our parent’s actions more than from what they tell us. So, although I grew up being told how amazing, or smart, or beautiful I was, of course, I picked up on the negative self-talk.
However, habits can change, and the way we talk and think about ourselves can evolve. I spent the last few years focusing on self-care and learning to love myself and in that time, one of the most powerful tools has been using positive affirmations. I currently have the My Affirmations app on my phone which makes an affirmation pop up on my notifications a few times a day. At first, I felt like they were cluttering my notifications and even thought about uninstalling the app but I decided to give it a chance. No, I didn’t start off saying them out loud. I didn’t start staring into the mirror daily and repeating until I believed. I just left the affirmations in my notification bar and I would let the affirmations float into my subconscious brain… and I am really glad that I did.
Over time, the affirmations started to feel more natural. Then they felt like something I could say out loud to myself and believe it. Eventually, I could say them to others and own it. I didn’t force it. I didn’t worry about whether I felt that they were having a huge impact right away. I would definitely recommend you try the app (or a similar app) and see where the journey takes you. Be gentle with yourselves. Progress happens.
The following are my favorite 15 affirmations:
